Joomla 1.6
Joomla 1.6 is Finally HERE!

Key things of value.

1 Detail ACL (Access Control Lists). Instead of having a limited vertical ACL (SuperAdmin, Admin, Manager, etc),  This means that specific content, components, etc can have controls over who manages the content. Multiple Groups, Multiple Levels, right down to individual objects.  Permissions can also be inherited from Parent Groups... Hurray!

2. Much Better Module Management.  Example: in current version you have to specify which specific menu items show a specific menu. In the new version, you can say show it everywhere "except"

3. New Category Structure. In old system you were limited to Sections and Categories. Now you can define your own unlimited levels for helping to better organize content.

4. New SEO Stuff.  Ability to Change Page Titles uniquely, add the site name to the Page Title and More.

NEW Admin Features.
a. New Buttons like Save and Add. In the old version if you clicked on NEW article, you then completed the article and then clicked Save and then had to click New again to begin another article. With Save and Add you Save your current document and it opens up a new one so that you can motor right along.
b. Save and Copy... does the same as above except it saves a copy of your current item and then opens a new one with the current copy in place already.  Great when you are doing styling treatments and just need to change a few items. Like a list of locations.  With this new feature, you could Save and Copy the first entry for a location and address and then it will duplicate that one automatically into the next listing, where you could just make changes and continue on your way.
c. Redirector - Allows you to build 301 redirects, 404 pages etc directly in Joomla. No need to worry about breaking a site by screwing up an .htaccess file.

5. Template Variants and One Off Pages.  In the past if you wanted a different arrangement, you had to either write php code to handle it  (if thens) or you had to deploy multiple templates. And then updating one template meant making changes to the others. Now you can have template variants which are the same template with just your changes.  Also if you want just one page that is completely different, you can do so without having to create a template for it... and it can be managed within the CMS.

6. TABLES ARE COMPLETELY GONE!!!! The old joomla had core code that still used tables (like component heading).  The new system completely eliminates tables.... finally.  Moves it towards XHTML1.0 STRICT compliance.  HTML5 is also supported out of the box.

7. Color Coded HTML Editor. For the techies who like to work with code in the editor.

8. New Media Manager - Multiple image uploads, better management... hopefully much fewer bugs. The old one was a mess.

9. UPGRADES!!! The ability to upgrade extensions with a tool that allows developers to upgrade in a uniform way. In the old version developers were left with many options and difficult instructions regarding how to upgrade. What a pain.  New version allows upgrades within Joomla itself... no having to go to the developer site to download and install an extension upgrade.

10. Plugins - now in their own directories and with much better management and controls.

11. Database Queries.  New API allows queries to be built programatically. Makes it a lot easier to make queries and to use other database engines.

12. New Forms Class.  Moved from JForm to JParamaters.  Much easier to filter inputs and much easier to replicate functionality without having endlessly duplicate code.
